Cheesy chips, garlic bread or doner kebab, everyone has their favourite post night out meal from the local takeaway. But our food takeaway habits are doubling our daily calorie intake.
The average alcoholic drink can add on an extra 100 kcals, but most won’t realise the average cheesy garlic pizza bread adds up to over 700 calories, and that’s if you don’t get a side of chips as well.
Nutritionist Tamzin Aldcroft highlights the dangers of consuming too much takeaway food, "No one realises just how much salt and fats they are eating from foods at the takeaway, they add on the sauces which is even worse."
Asked if young people realise how bad the foods are she said: "I think they do but when alcohol is involved everyone just becomes oblivious, the next day they regret it because you'll be bloated or feel sick from the foods."
With club events on every night of the week in Sheffield, freshers can be going out seven days a week if they wanted. But do they realise the effect it has on their diet.
We spoke to some SHU freshers who want to stay anonymous, to find out their takeaway habits.
Jordan, a criminology student said: “I’ll get a special garlic bread! It has chicken and a tomato base but as a garlic bread. Its one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. There’s just something about takeaway foods especially at the end of a night out, I just can’t stop myself getting a takeaway.”
Laura studying drama said: “It’s so bad isn’t it! I try my hardest to not eat from the takeaways and have some toast or something when I get in instead. Ill get something like once a week as a treat, maybe just cheesy chips or something.”
Adam who has been out at least four times a week since moving to Sheffield said: “Id love to care, but I don’t. I’m going out to enjoy myself, if that means a cheeky kebab on the way home, then I’m going to get one! What’s the point in sacrificing the best bit of a night out!”
