Alex Tant-Brown, Chairman of Sheffield Hallam University Conservative society, has suffered extensive social media abuse after he was allegedly attacked for being a Tory.

He said: “My phone had gone absolutely mental. Initially it was good support from my family and friends. It also entered the other side of Twitter. That’s when I got the death threats, people calling me tory scum and saying they should have used knives and finished the job.

“People you don’t even know saying you deserve to die. There’s so much unnecessary hate. I'm glad it happened to me and not somebody else. I wouldn't wish it on anyone else to get that level of abuse.”

The tweet Alex posted after he was attacked in Corporation night club, Sheffield.

Steffen Gordo, Secretary of SHU Labour society said: "What happened to Alex was disgusting. We absolutely don’t agree with it. I speak not only for myself but everyone in our society.

"Social media is good for encouraging debate and communication. But there is a very dark and sinister side of it.

"What’s really bad is that the university have failed to take action against those who have threatened physical violence to Alex and the Conservative society on Twitter."

Alex reported an ex Sheffield Hallam student who was sending him death threats on Twitter to the university.

A Sheffield Hallam University spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident involving one of our students who was allegedly assaulted. Our Student Support team has been in touch with the student and offered him support and advice.

“The incident has been reported to police, who are investigating, and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Alex Tant-Brown suffered a broken nose after he was attacked on the 27th September 2019 in Corporation nightclub, Sheffield.

Alex believes the attack was a political one. He said: “I was on my way to the toilet and someone grabbed me from behind and then punched me repeatedly saying you tory b******.

Alex said he was on a recruitment drive that week to get signs up for the university Conservative society and that's how they knew he was a tory.
